Using an active transgenesis technique founded by medical researchers at the University of Hawai`i Manoa, scientists in Turkey have produced glowing green rabbits. The transgenic rabbits were born last week in Istanbul. In normal lighting, they look just like their white rabbit siblings. But when exposed to black light, the pair of transgenic bunnies glow a vivid shade of green. The glowing effect is the result of a fluorescent protein from jellyfish DNA, which was injected into the mother rabbit’s embryo in the lab. The altered embryos were re-inserted into the mother rabbit, and when the litter of eight was born, two of the rabbits carried the “glowing gene.” The point of the experiment was to show that genetic manipulation with the University of Hawai’i’s technique works in rabbits. The overall goal is to introduce a beneficial gene into female rabbits, then to collect this beneficial gene product in its protein form in the milk the female rabbits produce. This approach could lead to new and competitively efficient ways to produce medicines. The Turkish success was a collaboration between two universities in Turkey and the Institute for Biogenesis Research at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at UH Manoa. "When we walk together, we are BIGGER than cancer." Relay for Life: Event Highlights Theme: Board Games University of Hawai'i at Manoa T.C. Ching Field April 12, 2014 - April 13, 2014 Event sponsored by the American Cancer Society Music: "First Breath After Coma" by Explosions in the Sky As part of this year's Relay for Life committee at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, I couldn't help but be blessed of the outcome of this event. For months of prepping and planning, it was beautiful to see it all come to life. Despite the strong wind and rain, the event still went on. To all survivors: you are the heart of all Relay for Life events across the nation. You are why we relay. As much as we want to instill hope in your lives, you also give us hope to live life to its fullest. You live life as though cancer doesn't define you, which is truly inspirational. Being personally affected by cancer with my family members + friends, I know how hard it can be to move on with life. But then that's the beauty of life, to get up from what brings you down and to become an even stronger person than whom you already were. A special thank you to all those who made this event possible. This Relay for Life event wouldn't be possible without you all! Let us continue to be the hope for all those affected by cancer. Help us FINISH THE FIGHT!
