A glamorous soirée in the iconic Cullman Hall of the Universe on Central Park West was the setting of a star-studded charity drive by luxury Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer and its Hollywood brand ambassadors Cameron Diaz and Leonardo DiCaprio. The exclusive event, held below the dramatic glass-cubed planetarium sphere in the American Museum of Natural History, brought together NY and Hollywood celebrities, business, fashion and media leaders from around the world and key figures of the international jet-set for a double-pronged charity push: to raise funds for the victims of Hurricane Sandy, and raise awareness for gender equality and the empowerment of women worldwide. U.N. Women wants gender equality not only to be mainstreamed into the post-Millennium Development Goals agenda but be one of the development goals after 2015, according to the agency’s deputy executive director, John Hendra. Hendra spoke with Devex Editor Rolf Rosenkranz on the sidelines of the 2012 European Development Days. He said that the post-MDG process should tackle what’s blocking women’s progress in society and threatening women’s rights. “We have to have gender equality goals that really … affect the whole world,” he told Rosenkranz, adding that the post-2015 agenda should be “transformative” rather than "technocratic." Watch the conversation between Rosenkranz and Hendra on the challenges faced and progress made by U.N. Women since its launch nearly two years ago, part of a series of conversations we video-taped with global development leaders in the center of the action at EDD12 in Brussels.

By Ramón Sánchez Orense (www.sanchezorense.com) Across Cambodia hundreds of women and men are helping to save lives and build a more equitable future for the country. They are community volunteers working to end violence against women and girls (VAW/G). This video features five volunteers working for three civil society organizations in Cambodia: People Health Development (PHD), Gender and Development Cambodia (GADC) and the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights (LICADHO) to raise awareness and change attitudes and behaviours towards VAW/G. These inspiring volunteers talk about what motivates them to volunteer, what changes they have seen in their community, and themselves. As parts of their work, these five volunteers participate every year in the white ribbon campaign, the largest global effort of men working to end VAW/G. Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about VAW/G. In 2011, UN Women, UN Volunteers and Partners for Prevention joined together under the umbrella of the UNiTE campaign to strengthen community-based mechanisms to prevent VAW/G in Cambodia. There were two parts to this initiative, one included a series of trainings and the provision of technical support to civil society partners to enhance their capacity to effectively manage and support their volunteers. The second element was a fellowship program to increase volunteers’ knowledge, skills and ability to mobilise others and serve as a catalyst to prevent VAW/G. This documentary was produced as part of this joint initiative, to highlight the important role that community volunteers play in preventing VAW/G in Cambodia and to be an advocacy tool to inspire similar local UNiTE champions in other countries.
