My showreel is a quick 2min 30s movie or rather collage of 5-20 second strips of me in my workshop, working on my lathe. Hopefully showing you quick examples of the work I do and how I create a wooden bowl! I love turning wood and find it therapeutic! Hope you do to! and if you hate the tune or want me to remove the tune due to copyright etc I shall! Have a look at my website: www.hunt-gather.co.uk for more example of my work.

    • Wood Turning - Returning a warped bowl/blank

      from Stephen Hughes Added 183 0 0

This isn’t a tutorial movie with me talking, but turn bowls after about 6 months of leaving the blanks to dry out. I put the blanks back on the lathe, and turn them to get the warps out of the bowl or the blank! Turning bowls a second time if they are warped is a tricky job because the bowls can be badly balanced! Its a technique that you can not do quickly, as the bowl can leave the lathe at speed! So I tend to use smaller tools! Have a look at my other work and my online shop: http://www.hunt-gather.co.uk

      • Wood Turning - Turning Larger Bowls Part 2

This is the second recording I've recorded myself recently, turning larger wooden bowls, and it still feels a bit strange, but will help remind me and you of the angles I have to put the wood on my lathe when I turn larger bowls. In this part I am smoothing the outside off roughly and speeding the lathe up a bit to get a smoother outer edge. In the next movie I will be putting a beveled edged whole in the middle/bottom for my chuck to fit! I didn't record me sharpening the tools first! or the sweeping up! :)

This is one of the first times I've recorded myself wood turning as it feels a bit strange, but will help remind me of the angles I had to put the wood on my lathe, when I turned this large bowl - as it doesn't fit the same way a small bowl would!

Worked on this documentary with two other lovely students at University of Oregon for my capstone course. It is about upcycling, which is essentially using old materials to create new fashion. To learn more, check out the documentary.

Enter a world where pennies become pendants and cutlery becomes couture. We at The Hairy Growler jewellery co. bring the twinkle of nature and the magic of myth to contemporary jewellery design. Each piece of our jewellery is crafted from 100% recycled raw materials from Sterling Silver, pre 1919 English coins, to the forks and spoons of the Victorian dining table. Everything we create is unique, ‘one-off’, and utterly beautiful; we take the old and discarded and transform them into wearable, sparkling, original pieces of jewellery, guaranteed to get you noticed. Everything made at our workshop and studio is unique, meaning it will be only for you. Each and every piece of jewellery is crafted by hand using only recycled raw materials. This simple, natural process means that each piece is closely connected to its maker and the little individual marks and subtle movements of tools that are sometimes visible are what make our pieces so special.
