For ten days, fifteen of us University of Southern California undergrad/grad students trekked to Ghana, Africa in order to set up a mobile clinic in a rural community with no healthcare access. The community, Ebiram, welcomed us with open hearts as our brigade established a temporary health clinic to diagnose and prescribe free medications. Hundreds of medicines were brought over as well as physical donations such as toys, clothes, etc. USC GMB fundraised for three months for the medicine, raising over thousands of dollars. We ran a successful brigade, seeing over 700 patients and running out of certain types of medicine. Aside from doctor shadowing, us students also filled prescriptions, manned triage, and provided public health mini-lectures to educate the community on things such as brushing their teeth and stretching before physical work. The community allowed us into their homes to converse with them, learn their stories, and understand their culture. A takeaway: they love to dance. It was a beautiful journey- filled with a million flies and bipolar weather flooding or cooking us. We went to the Cape Coast Castle and walked in the shoes of slaves before they were deported to the Americas. We hiked on bridges, forty meters high, in the rainforest canopy of Kakum National Park, catching a birds eye view of greenery and sky. We endured rainstorms that led to a stampede of hundreds of patients into our tiny clinic. We watched the creeping blushes of young children and elderly who had never seen a picture of themselves until they looked at our cameras. We left our hearts in Ghana.
