    Dr. Victoria Hand from the University of Colorado, Boulder discusses how she has re-envisioned her Knowing and Learning in Mathematics and Science course around a sociocultural perspective on learning. She describes, in particular, how she has connected the course at CU-Boulder with the AVID program. AVID is a nationwide program designed to provide extra academic support for first-generation college bound high school students who show promise. Students enrolled in Knowing and Learning at CU-Boulder serve as AVID tutors in area middle or high schools and are required to tutor seven times over the course of the semester. Students use this experience to develop a portrait of one adolescent that they have worked with consistently.
