Artist: ROGELIO SOZA Title: "Un-Balance" Materials: Speakers, steel and cable Year: 2010 About this piece: The title Un-balance 2010 is a play on words, meaning disequilibrium or disorder in English, and to take stock of things in Spanish. In this piece Sosa looks at what is happening throughout Mexico on the 2010 anniversaries, with special attention to the northern border, where tomando un balance (taking stock of the situation) one finds things quite un-balanced. Un-balance is a soundscape that blends a wide variety of material including sounds of gunshots and sirens recorded by common people on their cell phones or hand held cameras, the poetry of writer Gabriela Jauregui and the words of President Felipe Calderon. There is a relation between the structure of the piece, and the structure of the nation itself – suspended, enormous and fragile, projecting agitation in all directions. Sosa uses concrete sounds to confront the viewer with the contradictions highlighted in the 2010 celebrations.
