You cannot develop the way you have always done it. The days of setting up a single development environment on your laptop are long gone. Even running multiple virtual hosts on the same machine with a common database server is not enough in today’s environment. These days you need matching environments; development, testing, production. They have to match down to the service and version number. Managing virtual environments is a whole new skill you have to master. Virtualizing your development is here to stay. But with so many options, what are the best tools, techniques and practices for virtualizing development? How do you virtualize your development process? How do you keep everything up to date? How do you do all of this and still have time to do development? Srdjan Vranac introduces the world of virtualization and managing virtual development environments with the popular tools Vagrant, Puppet & Ansible.

The trailer for a game me and my content creating team did for an indie game competition. While we didn't end up winning the competition, it was great to be able to finish something that we're so proud of. Just send me a message if you're interested playing the remastered edition of this game, now in development.

Lots of great digital preservation applications and services exist, but very few are well maintained and packaged. Software is often difficult for non-technical staff to obtain and install or has poor documentation, with the process ending in frustration rather than a satisfied customer. This video looks at preparing packages for Debian based linux distros, but the concepts, practices, and indeed many of the tools covered are applicable to many development / deployment environments. Looking at why issues like documentation, software licensing, release versioning, changelogs, etc. all matter if software is to flourish in the hands of a wider community, or survive a change of maintainer.

Building development environments using Vagrant During Oskari.org development we noticed releases usually where delayed due to environment differences. Our desktop and server environments are quite different. We believe there should be no differences between the production and development environments. In our research we discovered Vagrant, which utilizes Virtualbox for creating virtual environments. It was a perfect solution and we wondered into the world of DevOps. We noticed our lack of automation and began our search for a good Configuration Management tool. Our research showed many promising alternatives and we ended up choosing Ansible. Armed with Vagrant and Ansible we began to automate our development environment in a reproducible way. This talk is about our journey into DevOps and why you should join us!

Erich and Luke cover how they’ve built a scalable, self-healing DevOps environment in record time for an EMS and acute care platform. By using Vagrant, Packer, AWS, and other technologies to standardize across development and production environments they managed to give their developers greater control and more hours of worry free sleep.
