The Submarine Wharf is located in Rotterdam’s port area and is a barren spot. The warehouse may be covered, but it feels like it’s outside, is the opinion of Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset. That is why the Scandinavian artist duo has built a complete residential block, including a square with trees and street furniture. The staging of this reality is completed by the presence of several residents and the exhibition visitor as an accidental passerby. Who is the loner and where are the masses? In this video, Elmgreen & Dragset talk about their installation and explain how The One & The Many relates to the rest of their oeuvre.

        • The seven pillars of H+F

Han Nefkens began acquiring and collecting contemporary art in 1999. In his search for things that really matter, he stumbled across the lack of financial possibilities available to European museums and the isolation of non-Western artists through lack of visibility. On the other hand, he discovered the enormous eloquence that art can have, which made it possible to discuss subjects that would otherwise be ignored, hushed up. Subjects such as HIV and AIDS. For building bridges that could connect areas of interest that seem to be far apart, Nefkens has apparently started with the construction of the pillars. At this moment in time - June 2011 - there are seven of them: H+F Collectie, ArtAids, Fundació Han Nefkens, H+F Mecenaat, H+F Curatorial Grant, H+F Fashion on the Edge and the pen of Nefkens. In this video there is an example of each of these pillars.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is restoring one of the highlights of the collection, the monumental triptych ‘Landscape with a Girl Skipping Rope’ (1936) by surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. The aim is to unify the wings and the centre piece. Dirt, discoloured varnish, retouchings and overpaint will be removed where possible. After reconstructing damaged parts, the impressive landscape will be in harmony again. The restoration can be viewed from 11 June until mid August in the Serrahall in the museum.

Jonieke van Es, head of the Collection and Research Sector, talks about her fascination with the painting ‘Two girls near an apple tree’ by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch that was acquired in 1957 for the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen by director J.C. Ebbinge Wubben. The acquisition can be called spectacular, because works by Munch at that time hardly ever came onto the market. The acquisition could take place thanks to the mediation of Johan H. Langaard, at the time director of the Oslose Kommunes Kunstsammlinger (since 1963 incorporated in the Munch Museum), which administered the majority of Munch’s work.

Han Nefkens (1954) grows up in Rotterdam as the eldest of five children. His father, Harry Nefkens, is a successful architect and earns a lot of money in real estate. His mother, Josephine, is the pivot of the family. But when Han is twelve, his mother becomes ill and dies several years later. In Mexico, where Han Nefkens settles as journalist and radio reporter, he meets Felipe, the love of his life. Their happiness, however, is put to the test by Han’s infection with HIV in 1987. While those dear to him die around him from AIDS (including his brother Victor), Han succeeds in suppressing the virus. He feels he is privileged - and responsible. Han Nefkens enjoys sharing his happiness, his fortune and his love of art with other people. He does this by working together with museums, stimulating artists to take the development of their imagination a step further, by financing AIDS research and by breaking down the silence around HIV. Hanneke Groenteman is a friend of Han Nefkens and visited him in Barcelona, where he now lives. This video portrait is made on the occasion of the book and the exhibition Han Nefkens - 10 years benefactor. The exhibition can be seen at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen from 25 June to 2 October 2011.
