LISA (Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis) is providing a series of evening short courses to help graduate students use statistics in their research. The focus of these two-hour courses is on teaching practical statistical techniques for analyzing or collecting data. Wednesday, June 24, 2015, 4:00-6:00 pm; Location: Fralin Auditorium; Instructor: Thomas Metzger; Title: Designing Experiments; Well-designed experiments can help researchers of all disciplines obtain results that are informative, efficient, and easy to analyze. Open-source data sets (through Minitab) will be utilized to demonstrate several useful techniques, designs, and methods of analysis for use in a variety of subjects. Researchers and students from all departments and levels of statistical experience are welcome. The Designing Experiments Short Course will focus on the following key topics: 1) Basics of observational studies and experiments: correlation, causation, and variation 2) Fundamental principles of experimental design: randomization, replication, and blocking 3) Common experimental designs and their analyses: one-way and two-way layouts, randomized block design, ANOVA, and split plot design Course files are available on the course webpage (lisa.stat.vt.edu/?q=node/9077).

Dr Deming said with reference to his system of profound knowledge that “one need not be eminent in any part, nor in all four parts, in order to understand it and to apply it”. When you arrive in a company as a new employee with a desire to encourage thinking and action based on Deming’s management philosophy, where should you start? Bear in mind that you may not have been invited expressly to do this, nor will you likely find anyone in the organization who has heard of Deming! So, how might you Break the Mould? Do you go for all four parts at the same time? Or take one part and go step by step? In this presentation, I will take you through the first fifteen months of my journey in Breaking the Mould. It has not been a smooth ride. I am hoping that it will trigger a robust discussion with learning for all who wish to attend.
