In some ways the music made it happen for me. Listening to Be Published and Be Damned I instantly saw images – albeit literal ones – and those images have stayed with me and I have tried to ‘honour’ those images. My approach was a bit ad hoc in some ways, but the music has an integrity which makes my job so much simpler. I was also working with a team of highly talented and dedicated people. Of course we all know who the Government Inspector is and I already knew quite a bit about the case but I did feel that care was needed in my approach to this topic…I went so far as to contact those who have far superior knowledge, in order that I might portray the character of the Inspector’s mind more honestly. Technically I felt I was treading a difficult path. Opera has narratives of course, but the narratives are often hyperbolic, perhaps don’t make sense and usually have important parts of story telling omitted. But opera is also about the drama and the image as well as the aria. Within the video I felt pulled to concentrate on telling a basic narrative whilst also trying to produce ambiguous images which allowed the music to speak and so transcend any storyline. In my head the images were very climatic but I felt there had to be restraint. I come from a family of classical musicians and it is still ingrained in me that the music takes precedence over everything. This is not always true but I think when making opera or music videos it has to be, or at least the image and the edit must only add to and not crowd out the initial art form, which is the music and the word. Probably the best bit of advice I can give- let the music speak and the rest will naturally follow!
