Seattle, the US mainland's bustling northwest port city, is also known as The Gateway to the Pacific. It is in this Emerald City where noted Filipino 'Old-Timers' like the celebrated labor organizer and writer Carlos Bulosan and thousands of early contract workers helped build and helped feed much of the west coast. Historical remnants and succeeding generations of these hard-driving, gritty Filipino contract workers are still visible in Seattle. Against this backdrop, a novel human services organization that is regarded as the principal assistance arm of local Filipino-Americans in the area, continues to seek and appeal for support from a broad array of private and public resources. This short video was written, created and produced by the staff of the International Drop-In Center (IDIC), a 41-year old non-profit social services facility based in South Seattle that focuses on serving the elderly, needy war veterans, and marginalized first-generation immigrant families. The IDIC, like any tax-exempt service-delivery organization, must constantly strive to sustain its operations that are funded by local government, foundations, civic groups and generous good souls. The video was written, conceptualized and produced by IDIC staffers led by executive director Sluggo Rigor, executive assistant Lanvin Andres, and counselor Marilen Tayao. Calling it "a work of love," the co-producers worked on the video under considerable time pressure and offered it to the organization's mission without incurring any expense. "We spent no more than $12 for hamburgers and pop one rush-rush night at the office," Lanvin happily shared.
