1. V&A Exhibition Road - Aston Webb Screen Gates by AL_A

    from AL_A Added

The Aston Webb Screen no longer serves to hide but to reveal. But altering it requires a response that finds the right balance between heritage and accessibility, and entails the demolition of listed fabric. A survey revealed a beautiful way of mapping the imprint of shrapnel damage from World War II. Gates to close the entrance at night were designed by AL_A to reference the absence of the stonework we are removing. We designed software to calculate angles of perforation to the gates, which traced the imprint of the shrapnel damage. The perforated gates resolve the paradox of resilience and permeability, and memorialise the past as well as celebrate the future. Movement past the gates gives multiple readings — from certain vantage points the pattern appears abstract and dynamic; from others you read the imprint of the shrapnel damage. www.ala.uk.com

On October 25th Union Black contributed to the Victoria & Albert Museum’s renowned Friday Late programme. The V&A’s Back to the 80s was held in conjunction with their ongoing Club to Catwalk exhibition (until February 16th, 2014). Union Black created 'Just an Illusion' especially for 'Back to the 80s'. It expanded on the earlier V&A commission, 'From the Decks to the Runway' exploring music subcultures by looking at the same but from a vibrant, visual, perspective. Reviving previous collaborations with performance troupe The Immaculate Extremists and students from London College of Fashion’s BA (Hons) Make Up and Prosthetics for Performance, Just an Illusion saw the Immaculate Extremists walking and dancing among the museum’s guests, decked out in classic 80s club-wear and striking make-up. The Immaculate’s tangible presence sought to remind visitors that for some the 1980s London club-goer’s uniform could be as outlandish and as variable as the club they attend. Ultimately, though, it was really all just an illusion: everyone was seeking recreational social and sartorial inclusion. Even by being ‘different’.

The V&A is teeming with amateur photographers and professional tourists, filling their cameras with thousands of photos of nothing. Suppose there were a creature living there that lived off them, it would be a pretty ideal habitat.

On The Difficulty of Serving Tea highlights the challenges behind the art of serving tea – in particular traditional North African mint tea. A set of pulleys, lots of string, a forgiving plate and a catapult invite participants into a strenuous, yet playful, challenge. On The Difficulty of Serving Tea was designed for the Chi-TEK Tea Party, a tea inspired showcase celebrating the work of internationally acclaimed women artists who utilise computers, electronics and technology in their work. PRESENTED AT THE VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM, LONDON, ENGLAND. Part of the 2011 London Design Week Invited by the MzTEK Team
