Once again, the Rückenfigur (back figure) with light, memory and a public art installation in NYC. In this work the Rückenfigur literally is walking backward and forward; toward the light and darkness and /or away from it. I created a mash up from the sound I recorded on site with some electronic sounds. I filmed this inside the Park Avenue Tunnel in New York City during the fantastic “Voice Tunnel” a light and sound installation by artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. My video piece is not a documentation of the installation but a render of my experience of it, the moment, place and people and of course the sound an important element of Rafael's piece. For a more straightforward documentation of the event please google "Voice Tunnel" along with the artist's name you will get many many wonderful options as it was a well covered happening. Below is an explanation of the installation as published by the Department of Transportation, one of the commissioning agents. About "Voice Tunnel" "Voice Tunnel" an interactive light and sound installation by Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, transforms the New york City 1,400 foot long Park Avenue Tunnel with 300 theatrical spotlights that produce glimmering arches of light along the tunnel’s walls and ceiling. Participants influence the intensity of each light by speaking into an intercom at the tunnel’s center that records their voice and loops it. Louder speech increases the lights’ brightness proportionally, creating a Morse-like code of flashes throughout the tunnel. The individual voices can be heard as pedestrians walk through the tunnel, on 150 loudspeakers, one beside each light arch and synchronized with it. At any given time, the tunnel is illuminated by the voices of the past 75 participants. As new participants speak into the intercom, older recordings get pushed away by one position down the array of light fixtures until they leave the tunnel, so that the content of the piece is constantly changing.

_grau is a personal reflection on memories coming up during a car accident, where past events emerge, fuse, erode and finally vanish ethereally … various real sources where distorted, filtered and fitted into a sculptural structure to create not a plain abstract, but a very private snapshot of a whole life within its last seconds … Media critic Matt Hanson, author of The End of Celluloid and founder of onedotzero festival says: "_grau appeals to me because it is organo-tech. it does not deliberately ape the abstract pioneers of abstract cinema, and it is worlds away from the motion graphic masturbation of many of those enamoured by digital animation. seidel's work is impressionistic, melding biological and emotional currents. out of amorphous shapes we make out bones, heads, a hand. a spirit leaving the body. at least, this is what i sense out of the chaos of galactic reconfigurations, neurological connections, and biological forms. this is a powerful piece of digital animation precisely because it does not feel like such, it feels emotional, epic. and once you release the background to the animation--communicating a 'coming to terms' with the aftermath of a car accident--you realise why." http://robertseidel.com/scrape.211.0.html scrape Robert Seidel Germany / South Korea 2011 film starts 1:30 Seoul seems to be a glowing, crystal-like urban canyon, each chasm illuminated and infinitely reflected in flat facets of glass. The film shows abstract formations that are scraped and cut out of the missing darkness of the city. They reveal a light volume overcoming the flatness of the façade by breaking into the space from the front or dissolving it from behind. In its slowly evolving, almost biological structures the work is reminiscent of deep-sea creatures. These complex life forms try to attract their prey with emission of light, so-called bioluminescence. In this case the “prey” is the potential audience, who nearly lose sight of the nearby billboards and city lights as they follow a hypnotic contrast to the pulsating city life of Seoul. scrape uses a colour palette of warm shades of blue, red and green which originate from the defined raster of neutral light sources of the media canvas. The moving afterimages painted in pure light extend over the orthogonal framework of the façade, providing a view into a stream of forms and colours. Voluminous black spaces divide and separate the scene into ever-changing ambiguous sculptural formations. With their constant process of growth and decay into darkness they seem to exist in the flat surface and the spatial depth at the same time. Overall the film maps the fluid dynamics of the inner forces of an organic structure, recapturing and quieting a world agitated by technology.
