1. ADM Videoblog #173 -- "Don't Talk About Your Resolutions, Do Them!"

This is generally the time of the year when people make bold announcements as to their New Year's Resolutions... I find the whole exercise quite funny, because the ones drafting these various lists put so much emphasis on the lists and less on the actual doing. You know what would be a real coup of a blogpost? How about how many of those various resolutions you actually succeeded in keeping?! That would make for an amazing read! Less talking and evangelizing and more doing, is what I say.

A chance encounter with a group of Filipinos in a scuzzy Toronto-area cafe had me thinking about the nature of laughter, and how some cultures just do way more of it.

Okay, okay, I get it, I get it... Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter star in The King's Speech . It's a WWII-era period piece exceptionally acted with bravo assists by prominent British A-Listers and distributed by The Weinstein Company (http://www.weinsteinco.com ). In other words, the film's got heat. Sure, Firth does a masterful job as the reluctant King George VI and Geoffrey Rush co-stars as the affable Dr. Lionel Logue, though I hardly think it's an Academy Award-worthy performance. I enjoyed it, to be sure, but I don't believe it's better than some of the other films I've seen this 2010. If Colin nails the award for Best Actor, he'll have rightfully deserved it (as himself). But the picture itself shouldn't land the honor.

You save up for months just to be able to afford gift-buying for an event which takes place over just a single day. You flow with society's rhythms and rack up hundreds and thousands in credit card debt just to be able to participate in the consumerist madness ("pay to play") for one crummy day in the year. It's ludicrous and it can possibly paint you out to be a tool. And I know you're not one, so here's what I think you might want to consider doing as an alternative...

It's shocking to see how few people with access to abundant resources -- compared to a lot of other folks on the planet -- refuse to venture forth into the world and experience it for all its worth. With access to: countless credit cards.lines of credit.all manner of products.all manner of services.low-cost airlines.and the democratic freedom and right to say exactly what you want -- among other political freedoms... ...yet people instead choose to cloister themselves in isolated bum-f--k little communities and instead bury their head in the sand. I saw quite a bit of this in the Czech Republic during my five years there -- and now I'm seeing a bit of it up here in the Great White North (aka Canada). I'm sure it exists in plenty of other places, but it's painful to see isolationist behavior in an affluent society. Shocking, actually. More of thoughts on the matter in the clip...

I really respect what Leah Biteolin does and what she stands for. Once you catch her in this Remervision- (www.remervision.com) produced clip, called, ostensibly enough "LEAH" -- http://vimeo.com/16627974 -- you will too. Community activist, lawyer, media savvy, this Ethiopian-Israeli and fierce advocate of her constituency's cause knows how to captivate an audience and sell a message. It's a sight to behold. Here's your Friday "grab-ass," Leah. You deserve it.
