      • An Afternoon by the Lake, Varenna, Italy 2014

from Jim Karnik Films / Added

Lago di Como in Northern Italy has many beautiful villages along its coast. Varenna is one of the most peaceful and relaxing we have visited so far. By September most of the tourists have gone home, yet the small shops, galleries and cafes remain open. We arrived in Varenna by train which hugs the mountains on the eastern side of the lake. We had a beautiful two bedroom apartment that had a balcony which looked down to the lake. This was a perfect place to begin our adventures. We made several hikes in the hills behind Varenna and the excellent ferry system took us to other destinations around the lake. Produced, filmed and edited by Jim Karnik Films http://www.fieldnotes.com

There is little known about these two villages on the Isle of Mull which were abandoned after a typhoid epidemic in the late 19th century, the epidemic almost wiped out both villages populations. Today it is rumored that the village of Crackaig is haunted by the ghost of the last remaining resident, who refused to leave his home instead he hanged himself from the only tree in the area. Today the remains of both villages bear testimony to what must have been a hard and testing environment in which to live and die.

Cat is a symbol for spiritual power, freedom, love of liberty and bad luck in Japan. On the contrary the black cat is linked to evil cunning in the Celtic world and with harmful djins in Islamic world. In Europe, the cat is honored as an exalted soul and at other times it is associated with witches and the occult (especially the black cat). It is therefore seen as a symbol of superstition and bad luck.
