I recently enjoyed working on the TV pilot for the Beauty and the Beast, based in a fantasy world. The exciting aspect of the show was the predominant use of virtual sets. Production Designer Giles Masters made the most of the possibilities offered by the virtual sets, creating a world of imposing spaces within a rich cityscape, aided by Art Director Jeremy Stanbridge. I have edited together some shots from the show along with some of the set design models. Take a look and see what you think, and make sure to watch it fullscreen. The company responsible for the VFX was Stargate. On set they deployed an impressive camera tracking and realtime compositing system. The on set monitors displayed the actors already composited into the virtual environments, in real time, providing valuable feedback for the production team. The quality of the rough composite was suprisingly high, with full depth of field, no obvious fringing and convincing colour management. Whilst greenscreen technology is far from new, I believe that the extent of its use for this TV show is pushing boundaries. Considering the VFX timescale (a couple of months) and a budget at a fraction of that for a blockbuster movie, the results are impressive. Also take a look at Stargates demo reel for the show, which includes more shots: https://vimeo.com/43190011 Stargate were also responsible for the iconic 1960's Pan Am terminal in the TV series of the same name.
