              • Minority Report 3D Tracking

                from Matthew Merkovich Added

Nearly 15 years ago I worked on the movie Minority Report and people often ask me what I did. Here's a short video describing just that. The shot showing the 3D camera track solved in SynthEyes was re-tracked for this little side project. Because of the great Matrox hard drive crash of 2007, all my Minority Report work files were lost . The shots were originally tracked using a plugin for 3DS Max called "Scene Genie" which ceased publication just a couple years after Minority Report was released. Fortunately, its author, Russ Andersson rewrote a whole new 3D tracking application from the ground up, called SynthEyes, which is what you see in this video. I use SynthEyes to this day for anything I need 3D or even 2D tracked in the VFX world. Check it out: http://ssontech.com

                  • Knocki

Knocki is the clapper of the 21st century. In early July, we got a call from Jake Boshernitzan, the founder and inventor of Knocki. We started tossing around video ideas, from interviews, to Old Spice-esque commercials, to short and funny bits, but it all seemed typical of a startup video. A few days later, Clayton and Taylor were throwing around ideas about making product videos less about the product and more about a story that will captivate people's attention. Half an hour later, they had a rough storyboard thrown together of what the production would be like. With Taylor getting married in 3 weeks, we only had about 2.5 weeks to start and finish the entire project. We had to find an actor, a set location, props, extra gear, and we still had to figure out the details of how to make the video work for the client's needs. But with a lot of long days and nights, a road trip to Abilene, and the help of some friends, we made it happen. Knocki is a smart device that gives you control of your favorite functions through the surfaces around you. It attaches to any hard surface and responds to different knock patterns anywhere on the surface to which it is attached. You can use it to turn on/off your TV, start the coffee maker in the morning, find your phone, notify the police of an emergency, and pretty much anything else you can imagine. The Knocki works with other smart devices like your Nest thermostat and your security system, so you you can easily integrate it into your increasingly smart home. Working with a 4-year old actor is not exactly a walk in the park. But after the first few scenes, we were able to convince Dexter that the Knocki prototype we were using was actually magical, which kept his attention for long enough to get the shots we needed. Taylor worked on the visual effects and edit while Clayton mastered the color grade. And that's how this happened! Let us know what you think below!
