This video is my second psycho-physics experiment exploring the cross modal relationships (sound↔️light) of perceptual capabilities regarding those characteristics that make it possible to follow counterpoint, normally thought of as a structure of music aspect. I've made a concerted effort this time to make it easier to follow the three visual music parts by providing more handles so one doesn't feel as though they're just being pushed into free videospace. The handles should become obvious during just a single viewing. All classical composers study counterpoint as used in the renaissance all the way to contemporary music. Music counterpoint is based on two or more independent lines sounding simultaneously. In this case I'm working with three visual music lines. Contrast in all its forms is the ground for the roots of contrapuntal independence - high/low, soft/loud, fast/slow, complex/simple, smooth/sharp, steady/changing, up/down, thick/thin etc. I'm avoiding music composition terminology but notice that abbreviated list covers the sound variables of frequency, amplitude, pulse rate, waveshape, articulation, directionality and virtual space. The principles of background, foreground, middleground work for visual music as well as sonic music. This experiment is also visually polymetric so it also involves visually meshing meters. The music, though it sounds homophonic, albeit complex, to most ears, is designed to support each of the 3 visual parts but to stay out of the way of the totality of the imagery. Some imagery twists, some bunches, some floats and some fills. The music is composed with multiple lines of counterpoint but in a much freer manner than the classical approach. Don't let either the music or the imagery hypnotize you or you'll just get lost which of course is the way most people will relate to this piece and that's fine with me. But there are enough sonic shockers in this piece to keep most people from falling into a trance. It's 3 part visual counterpoint; how many independent parts can you follow?

This was a three channel site-specific animation created for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, Croatia for Animafest 2015. The museum has three large display windows, each of which serves as a projection screen. I used the algorithms I developed for AlgoRhythm 1, hence the MSU Variation subtitle. There is no audio. The piece has four movements: 1: Fanfare 2: Scherzo 3: Trio 4: Finale You can see examples from a previous Animafest here to get an idea of how it will look at the site: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6S11Qwi_MCQ

Live video improvisation recording based on a set of sound and video cycles and layers dynamically chosen, mixed, pitched and sequenced in realtime-first performed at The Bridge Hotel Castlemaine as part of the Fringe Festival March 16, 2015. In the live performance set up junk percussion is played and the sound from this also affects some of the layers and loops to create specific visualisations of sound with distortions color and timing or sequence changes

                    Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
