In Uganda, 9 million people don't have access to clean water. Nate Lepp, Executive Director of ACTS, knew these numbers, but it wasn't until he spent some time walking with two women in Uganda on their daily journey to collect water that he really understood how difficult it is. Walking for water with Justine and Christine "was a really humbling experience," he said. So when he returned to Canada he was inspired to share this experience with others. He invited friends, family and supporters to join him on a Walk for Water, raising money for ACTS' work in Uganda, but most importantly, walking together to begin to understand what this daily task feels like. When you give the gift of water, you're not just giving freedom from disease, but also from the needless, time-consuming labour of walking for water. This time is used to grow food in a household garden, generate income, or go to school. When you give water, you're giving education, freedom, and life. Join us for our second Walk for Water in Langley on Sunday, September 13th: acts.ca/walkforwater

Hamilton Southeastern High School FFA member Paul Thieme was inspired to serve while attending the National FFA Organization’s Washington Leadership Conference. When he returned home to central Indiana from the week-long personal growth and leadership training conference in Washington, D.C., he organized a walkathon to help pay for the construction of a safe-water well for the village of Kager, Kenya. The event raised $7,000 for Walk4Water.

In some regions of the world, such as parts of Asia and Africa, people have to walk great distances to find drinking water. Women and children are usually responsible for this task. The average distance a woman in the developing world walks to get water is 3.7 miles a day, and she typically carries a load weighing 40 lbs. That’s a long way to go and a lot of water to haul! The average amount of water a family in Asia and Africa uses in one day is a little less than 5 gallons. By contrast, an individual in the United States uses an average of 100 gallons of water a day. Walk in your community to raise awareness about access to safe water around the world, and help make a difference in the lives of families in need! Walk SLO for Water will bring 2,500 Ugandan people in the communities of Omito, Amuca, Barapwo, and Anai safe water, sanitation, and hygiene for their lifetime. How YOU can get involved: 1. Sign up to walk. Encourage your church, school, business, club, family, friends to walk with you on World Water Day, 2014. Go to www.lifewater.org. 2. Fundraise. Ask people to sponsor your efforts by donating to your walk. 3. Host a fundraising activity to raise money and advocate for this issue. 4. Share your involvement on social media. let your followers know what you are doing to bring families safe water. 5. Donate to support someone else that is walking Learn more at www.lifewater.org
