The Visy Mountain For action: Go to www.waihekedoesitbetter.org.nz The madness of even suggesting that an exemplary community-owned waste management system be replaced by the dubious services of a failing multi national corporation in these challenging times is absurd to put it mildly. To that the Auckland city council add the insult of using taxpayer funded lawyers to fight the community who dares to point out that the current system is diverting more waste from landfill than almost any other town in the country, while creating jobs and high value recyclables.

I've visited Kashmir for the last three winters for snowboarding and to learn more about this fascinating place. This year I went back motivated to create a film raising awareness of the environmental issues facing the region as tourist numbers increase after two decades of turmoil. I still have a lot of work to do to piece together my footage but here is a little taste of what I captured. Anyone interested in joining me to help pressure the relevant authorities to change current practice please be in touch. The footage was shot on a Canon 7D with various lenses, I recorded sound using a Zoom H4N and edited using Final Cut Pro 7.

                      from A.J. Marson Added 2,262 4 2

40 years ago, David Lee Hoffman returned to California from a decade long journey traveling the world. Although he was leaving his nomadic lifestyle behind, he kept the lessons of the zero waste communities he was once part of. Now that he had put roots down in Marin, he was determined to create a home with sustainable systems that would eliminate his carbon footprint. At 72 years old, he is on the verge of achieving that goal. David’s home is the epitome of tranquility, filled with inventions that are both sustainable and beautiful. He has designed a complex solar powered black and grey water system, which means he can address nearly all his water consumption with rain. The major elements of this system are themselves works of art, and all have threads of the different cultures he’s lived with woven throughout. However, Marin County never issued permits for any of the 25 structures erected on his property, and they are now, decades later, preparing to seize and demolish everything. David has dubbed his property The Last Resort and has surrounded himself with a group of devoted supporters to fight for historic landmark status. However, even with a petition signed by over 1000 local residents and the support of three recognized historians, the county has largely ignored the community’s pleas. The demolition of this property would mean the loss of David’s life’s work and the loss of a historic creation that we should all have the opportunity to enjoy. Please share this short video and spread the word. This story is far from finished and I am planning on following David's plight until it comes to an end. Please contact Steve Kinsey, our local Supervisor at skinsey@marincounty.org and encourage the county to conclude an agreement with David.
