In each port, we visit a school. This video follows the Beautiful Nation Project to Luperon in the Dominican Republic. Tonia visits classes 4,5 and 6 at Angela Gonzalez Nugent School in La Sabana, which just outside of Luperon. This video shows the water quality testing kits that are introduced to the students and shares our methods for introducing a plastic pollution curriculum. Mapping activity is part of our assessment tools, from ReachtheWorld.org/GeoGames

Many years ago, the headwaters of Wolf Creek, in downtown Foley Alabama, were manually channeled into a straight line ditch. This was a common practice back then to remove runoff water quickly. However, the channeling also removed nearby vegetation which shaded the water and increased water speed. Both of these effects are harmful to aquatic animal species and increase sediment downstream. The city, and volunteers, are now in the process of restoring the creek to a more natural path, and planting proper riparian plants. The creek's beginnings can once again provide good water quality and wildlife habitat.

Iowa farmers can create vital habitat for grassland birds by incorporating small strips of native prairies into row-cropped fields. Anna MacDonald, ISU graduate student in wildlife ecology, discusses a Leopold Center research project at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge.

Since inheriting their family’s century farm in Montgomery County, Maggie McQuown and her brother wanted to improve the quality of their land by reducing erosion, increasing water infiltration, and providing habitat for pollinators without taking too much land out of production. In this video, McQuown discusses why they put in prairie conservation strips. For more information, see the longer video, Preserving the Balance: Prairie Conservation Strips.

Now the Badger Creek Watershed Coordinator for the Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District, Anna MacDonald received her Master of Science in Wildlife Ecology from Iowa State University in 2012. While a student at ISU, MacDonald’s research focused on evaluating how birds respond to small amounts of prairie integrated into row crops as part of the STRIPS project at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge. In this video, MacDonald discusses the results of this study. For more information, see the longer video, Preserving the Balance: Prairie Conservation Strips.
