1. Aji Wayang | Short Docs

    from Junito Drias / Added

Aji Wayang means (literally) wisdom wayang. Wayang itself means (wikipedia) a particular kinds of theater. Wayang means also puppet. This video tries to explore the meaning of wayang show (shadow puppet) for the spectator. Of course this short documentary will not able to give you deep understanding about wayang. The purpose is to bring you a short introduction about what wayang is. And it has Dutch subtitle. I made it for Dutch media :) The video shows also the strongest point of Canon C100: shot in the low light environment. It is grainy, but nice (but for some people's eyes are bad) grainy. I had to push the iso to 3200, the lower is 1600. But still nice. And important to mention that i handheld it all the time for this documentary. For EF without IS, this would a problem. I shot some with IS some did not. Shot with Canon C100, EF lens 50 mm f/2.8; 100 mm f/2.8 and 16 - 35 mm f/2.8. Edited and bit graded with Adobe Premiere Pro CS6

Culhwch ac Olwen: the Wayang was performed on the 20th February 2011, at the Pitcher and Piano in York. The performance combined aspects of traditional wayang (Javanese gamelan puppetry show) with new compositions for both gamelan and a small folk ensemble (harp, voice and recorder), alongside pre-recorded sounds. I adapted the plot from an ancient Welsh quest story from the Mabinogion. Culhwch must complete a number of tasks to win the hand of his true love, Olwen, daughter of Ysbaddaden Pencawr the chief giant. Combining both Welsh and English, the show mirrored the language contrasts of a traditional wayang. The projection, which in a standard wayang would probably be a plain screen, here uses photos of Wales and other locations to create scenery for the puppets. The screen can be viewed from both sides. To reflect the comedy of a wayang, I included references to familiar Welsh sitcom, Gavin and Stacey, alongside some Welsh stereotypes! Many thanks to all who were involved and collaborated with me on this project; especially to members of the University of York Gamelan Sekar Petak. Diolch yn fawr iawn!
