Sunday, May 10, 2015 - Sanctuary Chorus; Wayne Slater, organist; Scott Dean, director. If you were to select scripture to conclude the story of God’s plan for salvation for the world through His Son, Jesus Christ, what would you choose? The “librettist” of Messiah, Charles Jennens, selected the liturgical text read today from Revelation 5, the words of the four living creatures, the elders, and thousands and thousands of angels praising and exclaiming the Lamb, Jesus, as the only one worthy and able to open the scroll of salvation. If you were a composer, such as Handel, how would you express that scene through music? Today we experience (in part), worship through, and join our voices together to bring to life this incomparable vision of John. Handel sets the solemn character of Christ as the worthy Lamb slain for us in powerful block chords of majesty followed by the down-pouring of all of heaven’s “power, riches, wisdom . . .” given to the Son of God, vividly depicted by descending scales accompanying the voices. The song of praise (“Blessing and Honor”) of all creatures in heaven and on earth begins with strong, unison proclamations. Their song separates and divides, embracing all space and time: eternity! The final word of the Bible, the oratorio, and this revelation, Amen, receives Handel’s finest and most costly (difficult) compositional gift: counterpoint and polyphony, to express the triumph of God’s victory through Christ. As conductor Helmuth Rilling writes, “This is the overwhelming culmination of a spiritual journey that closes the door on one of the most magnificent and beloved masterpieces of all time”.
