See blogs.newschool.edu/parsons-paris/2014/06/12/mfa-dt-interaction-futures/ for a complete write-up on this workshop and its outcomes. A process video that will be part of a presentation of concepts developed during a weeklong workshop at Parsons Paris and NUMA between May 26-30, 2014 on the topic of Interaction Futures in 2020-2025: Imagining the Metaverse. A cohort of MFA Design and Technology candidates from the New York Parsons campus traveled to Paris to work with workshop mentors Lorenz Bohrer from Advanced Interaction Design, Audi AG, Benjamin Gaulon, program director at Parsons Paris, and David Carroll, associate professor at Parsons New York. During a weeklong workshop, graduate student teams developed speculative concepts around notions of the Metaverse, a term describing what the Internet and its related cultures and technologies will evolve into over the next 10-15 years. Within this conceptual framework the teams developed initial proposals for projects interrogating the notion of a Spectrum of Involvement within the contexts of A Spiritual Awakening, Digital Pathologies, Dimensions of Presence in a Mixed Reality, and a Wearable Sensorial Diary. We propose a new type of tactile displays that drag a phys-ical tactor across the skin in 2D. We call this skin drag. We demonstrate how this allows us to communicate geo-metric shapes or characters to users. The main benefit of our approach is that it simultaneously produces two types of stimuli, i.e., (1) it moves a tactile stimulus across skin locations and (2) it stretches the user’s skin. Skin drag thereby combines the essential stimuli produced by vi-brotactile and skin stretch. In our study, skin drag allowed participants to recognize tactile shapes significantly better than a vibrotactile array of comparable size. We present two arm-worn prototype devices that implement our con-cept.
