Bloom is a contemporary cocktail dress for a red carpet or other formal event, which one might attend with a friend or date. Inspired by garments worn by celebrities such as Katy Perry, who are known to showcase dresses that often have an electrical or other unusual component, Bloom utilizes LED bulbs controlled by an Arduino Lilypad. In its inactive state, Bloom features a decorative blossom branch that elegantly reaches over the wearer's bust. It has been designed with a modern, clean aesthetic in mind. However, when pressure switches on the lower back of the garment (for instance, when someone's arm is around the wearer whilst posing for a photograph) the garment comes to life, with the blossoms gradually illuminating whilst the contact is maintained. When the contact is broken, the flowers gradually fade away. With an ultimately fun yet elegant objective, the garment refers to the idea of 'blooming in someone's presence' and offers a creative illustration of that concept. It is constructed using the reverse side of a satin synthetic fabric, and uses interfacing to diffuse the light within the hand-crafted blossom flowers. Inspired by actual blossoms, the light and therefore color emits from the centre of its artificial counterparts.
