This was our journey to Rari, a town of horse hair weavers located 300km south of the Chilean capital in the Andean foothills of the Maule Region. We spent the day with Marcela Sepúlveda, a crin expert artisan and Eggpicnic collaborator. Rari in Mapudungun means shrub. Mapudungun is the language of the Mapuche people, the past inhabitants of this region. Weaving horse hair is a 250 year tradition that started in Rari and is the only place in the world where this tradition takes place. In the early days, they would weave and combine populus roots and horse hair (crin) until a group of nuns from Mexico arrived and the roots were replaced with a new vegetable fibre which is presently used. For hundreds of years the women of Rari have been creating butterflies, ladies and necklaces. Today, there are around eighty weavers, most of which are over forty. There are very few children that weave horse hair and the majority are girls. The young people of Rari aspire to migrate to the cities, making it difficult for this tradition to continue. The woman of Rari teach whoever would like to learn this tradition and they currently visit several schools in the area with the wish to pass this tradition on to the future generations. Marcela was born and raised in Rari and comes from a family of artisans. Her mother taught her how to weave when she was seven years old and she has prided herself on it ever since. She began making circles which she would turn into bookmarks which helped her earn extra income as a child. She never left her studies behind and would complement her studies and her weaving. Although she has had to work other jobs in order to finance her family's expenses, weaving crin has been a great help to support her husband and pay for her children's education. One of Marcela's many dreams is that her sons give her granddaughters, so that she can teach them the techniques of how to weave crin and to keep the tradition alive in the family. I could describe what it sounds like to make fabric, but it's easier to let you hear. No 37 is written on this loom. Can you imagine a factory at work with at least 37 of these machines? Take a look on my website for more images of the fabrics i make. www.severineamsing.nl

Watch the full (subtitled) movie here -----> youtube.com/watch?v=LRFAVxz7g0U At the end of September 2013, fifty professional dance, theatre and performance artists from across the globe came together for one week in a huge abandoned factory building in Brussels. They met and formed a temporary community within which they played, questioned, and performed together in order to explore the interaction of improvisation and community.
