9pm, 1st April 2012, Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek - the stunning historical setting for an ambitious 3d projection on one of the most distinctive buildings in The Netherlands to help launch new Manpower Group company, Experis. The famous cylinderical shape of the Gashouder (a steel gas tank built in 1902 which can extend to a height of 40m) provided an opportunity for PostPanic to push 3d projection technology even further and create a stunning 4 minute visual ride through the story of ‘The Human Age’ - the aptly titled primary focus of the new Experis recruitment brand. Calling upon Experis and Manpower’s core belief in inspiration and creative focus in the workplace of the future, the brand commissioned Amsterdam-based creative studio, PostPanic to produce a unique piece of visual art not only to act as a distinctive launch moment for the brand in the Netherlands but also for the enjoyment of art lovers and local residents in the area. PostPanic directors and motion graphic specialists, Eat My Dear, took on the challenge of creating the 4 minute projection experience - this their 2nd projection mapping project to date (they also directed PostPanic’s 3d projection in Dubai for washing powder brand, Ariel). Jules Tervoort, Executive Producer at PostPanic, ‘This was a great project for us because Experis ultimately gave us the freedom to achieve something highly ambitious - an abstract and graphic interpretation as a journey through their story of ‘The Human Age’. In addition, we were given this amazing building to use as a canvas and it meant we could really let our imaginations use the building’s cylindrical shape to its full potential.’ Amsterdam’s Massive Music provided the dramatic soundtrack which accompanied the final visual experience.

    • Rethinking Design Thinking - Paul Pangaro - PICNIC '10

In a world of increasing complexity, our problems just seem to get worse and worse. While the activity we call "design" began at the dawn of civilization, “design thinking” has recently been proposed as a means to solve these “wicked problems”—as well as all but guarantee a path to innovation for organizations of all stripes. But what is "design thinking"? And is it the panacea proposed? In an unblinking assessment of where design is and where it could take us, Paul Pangaro offers a critique of design thinking grounded in a cybernetic perspective. He argues that conversations are the heart and substance of all design practice, and shows how a cadence of designed conversations is an effective means for us to comprehend, and perhaps even begin to tame, our wicked problems. The Vimeo party was great! That's why I decided to make this short edit just show a few things that went down that night. Food and drinks were free and the shortlist of videos for the Vimeo awards were great! The music in the edit is by Eclectic Method (eclecticmethod.net) as was the DJ at the party. He's one of the three people of Eclectic Method and he was doing the DJing and VJing at the same time by himself and did one hell of a job! These guys are worth checking out! I met a lot of interesting and friendly people who all shared a passion at some type of film/video/photography production. Vimeo staff were super friendly and open to everyone! Thanks Vimeo, hope you come back next year! Designs by Peter van de Riet of OddOne.

In less than ten years the world’s largest cities will be exclusively located outside of the West. The metropolis, zenith of Western civilization, will be a property of the third world. What will be the consequences of this paradigm shift? What theoretical framework could guide the turbulent growth of cities in emerging regions and what will be the repercussions for the West as a former front runner? Reinier de Graaf joined the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA, founded by Rem Koolhaas) in 1996. As Partner of OMA he is responsible for a number of building projects in Europe, Russia and the Middle East. www.picnicnetwork.org

Your past actions are the best predictor of your future decisions. Your past actions – or the memory of your past actions – have always been immutable. But what if they weren't? What if marketers could meddle with your memories and insert product placements where they weren't before? Who would we be? What implications would it have for how we live? What if this wasn't all hypothetical? In this talk, Aza Raskin will tell you how to do the meddling, so that we can figure out how to stop it. Otherwise, our memories won't be pristine for long.
