Commissioned by the Sikka Art Fair 2014, Dubai, for the Project: What Do You Hear? This project required the interpretation of a composition created by Award-winning composer Reiner Erlings who created the sonic palette for various artists to draw from. This one piece of music will travelled to many artists, inspiring each of them to create a piece that represents their in the medium of their choice. THE LONGEST ENGAGEMENT was conceptualised by me (MRINAL) in my avatar as an artist. Inspired by the character, Miss Havisham, from the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, this is the story of a bride stuck in time for 40 years. She is perpetually in a state of listless anticipation of her own wedding to begin and hoping for her estranged fiancé to return. Deserted on the wedding day at 8.40 am, each memento in Miss Havisham’s room is in synchrony with that frozen moment. The first edition of ‘What Do You Hear?’ was an idea conceived by Reiner Earlings & Gayathri Krishnan and hosted in one of the houses at the historical Bastakiya, Dubai – the home of Sikka Art Fair. Since the music is the nucleus of the exhibit, the room was equipped with state-of-the-art speakers that played the composition in surround sound through out the exhibition. A little shortfilm about sprintime and nature. The main reason for the film was testing different equipment and some nice music. Testing the Panasonic GH4 with different tripods, lenses (Canon, Sigma, Lumix) outside on a spring evening. Also testing slowmotion, 4K downscaling/punching-in, athmo recording with internal camera-mic, lens whacking and more. I really love the slowmotion of the GH4! The Canon lenses work nice, if you have a fast lens, you really need a ND-Filter, because you can not use electronic controls for the aperture with a mechanical adapter (unless you are using the electronical Metabones adapter). Using 4K and punching into the scene in the middle of a smooth slow pan is amazing! Enjoy the film! Vanessa Cara-Kerr If you like my channel, feel free to subscribe. I had the pleasure recently attending a very special event held in Brighton and meeting Philip Bloom, Vincent Laforet, Nino Leitner, Haz Dulull and also the very talented James Miller who ran a workshop purely about mastering the art of Lens Whacking. This film shows some of the vibes I captured whilst experiencing and learning from the master himself!
