1. Bows, Arrows, Flintknapping

    from Brad Salon / Added

The Bows, Arrows, and Flint Knapping classes are held every winter at Roots School in Central Vermont. During the course of the nine days students build their own Osage Orange self bow, learn to make and use stones to create tools and projectile points, and create beautiful and functional primitive arrows. Traditional tools are used alongside chert and flint scrapers, students work bone arrow heads with all stone tools, make pitch glue for hafting, and work sinew and wild turkey feathers for fletching. Truly one of my favorite classes to teach and film.

Students from the Wilderness Survival Immersion Project at Roots School in Vermont create a bow drill fire completely from natural materials, using only stone tools. The Wilderness Survival Immersion Project is a nine month long program where students learn and become proficient at humans beings oldest and most necessary skills. Students learn to provide shelter, water, fire, food for oneself and ones group. The year ends with a four day and four night survival trip where the students go out with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
