This is the visual poem of William Trubridge's world record freedive to 100 meters (one hectometer, basically one football field length and back) in order to bring light to the plight of the world's smallest cetacean, the Hector's Dolphin of New Zealand. With one breath of air and diving without weights, fins or any propulsive assistance, William descended to 101 meters in the waters of Dean's Blue Hole, Bahamas, the deepest blue hole in the world. This short documentary of the record attempts to transmit what it is like to freedive deep beneath the surface, and how we can return to explore our potential as an aquatic mammal in the search to help our endangered cousins of the seas. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Directed and Edited by Matthew Brown Written and Produced by William Trubridge www.verticalblue.net Director of Photography - Matthew Brown UNDERWATER CAMERAS Jason Sapp Paul Heinerth Brian Kakuk Charlie Beede Brian Pucella Alfredo Romo Paolo Valenti Igor Liberti SURFACE CAMERAS Matthew Brown Nic Rowan Dolphin Footage - Liz Slooten, Steve Dawson, and NZ Whale and Dolphin Trust Music Composed by Christopher Ward Voice Coaches - Linda Trubridge and Gerry Dinnage TEAM VERTICAL BLUE AIDA Judges - Ute Geßmann and Ben Weiss Coach/Timekeeper - Brittany Trubridge Deep Safety Divers - Paul Heinerth, Brian Kakuk, and Jason Sapp Safety Divers - Charlie Beede, Brian Pucella, and Alfredo Romo Still Photography by Igor Liberti and Paolo Valenti www.whaledolphintrust.org.nz/nihectors.html Here's sort of the making-of/behind the scenes (basically bloopers) of the video, hehe http://tinyurl.com/73n99pz shot on the naked Canon HV40 (R.I.P) and edited with Sony Vegas

William Trubridge becomes the first human being to dive completely unassisted to 100 meters (one hectometer). With a single breath of air, and only his hands and feet for propulsion, he set this historic world record in Dean's Blue Hole, Long Island, Bahamas, on December 13, 2010. Directed by Matthew Brown http://www.vimeo.com/matthewbrown/videos. Music by Hans Zimmer. The names listed during the descent were the supporters who each purchased a meter of the 100m rope. For more information on William Trubridge, freediving and courses, visit http://www.verticalblue.net The dive was done to raise awareness of the plight of the Hector's Dolphin. There are now only 100 remaining North Island (Maui) Hector's Dolphins - one of the smallest and most beautiful species of dolphin in the world.  Hector's Dolphins are found only in New Zealand, and only in shallow coastal waters, less than 100 meters deep, putting them at the mercy of gill-net fishing that takes place in those waters.  Their population has been reduced by 75% in the last 30 years, and the Maui Dolphin subspecies is teetering on the verge of extinction. FULL FILM NOW AVAILABLE IN ITUNES - http://itunes.apple.com/us/movie/transcendence/id542556512 Over the past year and a half I have been working on a project exploring some of the psychology behind the extreme sports experience. While researching the topic I came across work by Dr Eric Brymer and began to read his thesis. His findings were so interesting that I decided to approach him about turning some of his work into a documentary. In May 2011 I left NZ to film and interview Eric in Australia and gathered what would become the structure to this film. I have worked with some amazing athletes including William Trubridge, Mike Abbott, Jokke Sommer and Vanessa Quin. This is just a taste of what is to come in the film. Expect more interesting insights into what goes on in the body and mind of these athletes as they develop their skills throughout life all the way through their chosen extreme activities and see how they develop as a person as a result of it all. This film is available in NZ from Canoe and Kayak Taupo - 0800KAYAKN or online throughout ITunes. For more information on the film or if you are a company who wishes to sponsor this project please contact Josh at - joshneilson@gmail.com www.southernundergroundproductions.com Thanks very much to everyone who has made this project happen! Without you I would not be able to share this film right now! Please share this with all your friends and family and help me spread the good word. Cheers Josh

00:50 The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau is the world’s most prestigious surf event and the world’s best big wave surfers are now officially on call. EpicTV Surf Editor Dave Mailman explains the details of this unique event. To get more info, check out his blog post at http://daily.epictv.com/blog/2012/11/12/surfing-eddie-would-go/ 01:45 World records are dropping like crazy at the Suunto Vertical Blue freediving event. The organizer, William Trubridge – current record holder in the Free Immersion and Constant Weight Without Fins categories – runs through the highlights. 03:10 In the Vendee Globe round-the-world race, British skipper Alex Thomson has steadily worked his way up from the middle of the pack to second place as the fleet nears the treacherous south Atlantic. Want to know what ridiculous songs get stuck in his head while he’s trying to stay awake and avoid crashing into submerged icebergs? So did we, so we asked him. 05:01 Snowboarder John Jackson is more popular than … umm ... bacon. We skyped him up to get the down low on filming Art of Flight, the end of former sponsor Forum Snowboards, and whether a certain performance-enhancing drug should be banned or promoted in snowboarding.
