At the chilly, snowblown, tail end of January, Wine Australia hosted a truly remarkable tasting for a select group of New York City's top Sommeliers, including GFR favourite, Terroir's Paul Grieco ... Also present were a covert elite unit of Toronto's finest sniffers and slurpers: Maple Leaf Sport's Jennifer Huether MS and Jonathan Gonsenhauser, Canoe and Jump's William Predhomme, Langdon Hall's Kathleen Moore, and The Granite Club's Corey Ladouceur. A formidable tasting team if ever there were one... www.goodfoodrevolution.com

Founded back in 2003, Gold Medal Plates was conceived as a project to raise substantial funds for Canadian athletes through the country-wide celebration of gastronomic excellence. Earlier this week in Toronto judges James Chatto, Anita Stewart, Christine Cushing, and David Lawrason boarded a bizarre limo/bus/stripclub hybrid along with 24 VIP's who had successfully bid at auction for privilege of being a "Toronto's Best Chef Food Critic For a Day". These auction winners would spend the entire day (10am - 8pm) shadowing the judges as they travelled around the city tasting each Gold Medal Plates competitor's dish and beverage pairing at their respective establishments, making for a most fun day on the road! I had the distinct pleasure of accompanying the judges and their entourage of Toronto foodies as they evaluated each plate and pairing. Marks were carefully assigned and then tallied in order to declare the Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners of Gold Medal Plates Toronto, with the Gold winner travelling to Kelowna to represent Toronto in the National Final. Despite the fact that my own scores would have no impact upon the official results, I was meticulous in my notetaking and assignation of marks. The following video is a record of the day's proceedings as well as my personal take upon the competitors' dishes.

Just the other week, early on a bitterly cold morning, an invited group of Toronto's top Sommeliers arrived at Terroni's Summerhill location for Wine Australia's day of Sommelier immersion, an intense day of academic study into some of the more interesting wines coming from the vast country that is Australia. Wine Australia's Chief Wine Educator Mark Davidson was assisted by Winemakers Iain Rigg (Brokenwood, Hunter Valley) and Matt Fowles (Fowles Wine, Strathbogie Ranges) in leading the group through multiple flights grouped by varietal/blend, and focused upon regional variation. As the day wrapped up Davidson presented the group with an open ended discussion topic regarding what had been studied over the previous hours: "Discuss the challenges and opportunities for selling regional Australian wine in Ontario" Giving the group a few days to gather their thoughts, participants were invited to send their conclusions to Davidson. He would then go on to select the two best entries and they would both be rewarded with an all-expenses-covered trip to the wine regions of Australia later in 2013. As one would imagine, there was considerable excitement about this great educational opportunity...
