This is a short preview and handful of images of what is to come of my one hour documentary of my trip to Cuba. I went as a tourist to see family members and to meet new ones. The Cuba I experienced was magical. This is not the Cuba most Cubans in the island experience though. Stay tuned to my documentary where I explain what I saw, what I experienced and what I learned from the time I spent in this magical place that seems like going back in time.

Para Mi Mama (for my mom) is a preview/part I for a documentary called 'La Lotería de la Vida" which is in post-production. This short follows Lexi Hiland, a baby who was left at a hospital by her deaf birth mother in Pamplona, Colombia. Twenty years later, Lexi learns that she was taken care of by a stranger for her first year on earth. This past summer, a small crew with members from New York, Costa Rica, Ohio & Arizona, went back to film this moving story. The first installment for the film was to write a letter for Lexi's birth mother. W. McGrath Lexi Hiland Produced by: Lexi Hiland Paula Arce Director of Photography: Thomas Shannon Production Asst: Nora Nicholl WORDS: Dear Mom, Twenty two years after you abandoned me, I went looking for you. But Im not sure why. Even if I shouted you wouldn’t be able to hear me. They told me you are deaf, They told me you would disappear into the mountains, They told me that was all they knew. I’m much healthier now than when you last saw me. After you left me at the hospital, some nice strangers took care of me-- A woman named Maria breast fed me back to life. I was later adopted to a nice couple from the United States. I grew up with arms of love surrounding me, With memories of Christmas morning, Cheers from the sidelines as I ran around in jerseys twice my size, Awkward adolescent performances. An educated upbringing, A traditional American childhood. Through out the years, I would think about you, Wondering if you were alive. In college I had incredible opportunities I joined a sorority I became a musician and was elected student body vice president I worked for the 2012 London Olympics I walked across the stage, an accomplished graduate I wonder, does any of this matter? What would my life be like if I would have stayed here with you? Would I struggle to survive? Would I go hungry every night ? Would I know how to read my favorite books? Who would my heroes be? Would I be more happy than I am today? I couldn’t find you, But I met some of the beautiful people, who reshuffled the deck of cards that were dealt to me at birth. I fell in love with the Colombian people. I’m at peace with not knowing who you are. But I just want you to know, I’m a woman now. And I will always wonder what your life would be like if you were given the same opportunities as me Love, Your daughter Lexi
