Reyhaneh Jabbari was hung on October 26, 2014 for murdering a man she said was trying to rape her. Jabbari was arrested in 2007 for the murder of Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi, her alleged abuser. Jabbari stabbed Sarbandi with a pen knife in the back after he had drugged and attempted to rape her. Jabbari removed all signs of feminine beauty in order to be viewed in a non-biased manner in court. Unfortunately Jabbari was found guilty and believes that her polished nails incriminated her in the eyes of the Iranian legal system. I decided to overlap the hands of three women shown beautifying themselves with fake nails. All three women put on the fake nails and then removed the nails accompanied by the final voicemail Jabbari left for her mother. Featuring the hands of (in order of appearance) Oletha DeVane, Anne Villamater and Laking Hatcher. Featuring the voice of Allison Kilroy. Special thanks to Buzzfeed News, BBC News, Alan White (Buzzfeed News), Match Zimmerman, Oletha DeVane, Camille Gustus and Chris Kozjar.

1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. Every February, we rise – in hundreds of countries across the world – to show our local communities and the world what one billion looks like and shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face. We rise through dance to express joy and community and and celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence. We rise to show we are determined to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable.

Since the passing of HB2 in the state of Texas, the entire region of South Texas has become dependent on a small but resilient clinic in downtown McAllen for safe, legal abortion care. HB2 has closed it down twice leaving poor and/or undocumented people without safe reproductive care but luckily through judicial action, the clinic is currently open to keep providing quality reproductive health care. On January 24th, 2015, the 42nd anniversary of Roe v Wade, local Catholic parishes held an anti-choice march which would pass by Whole Woman's Health Clinic during a day it would be seeing patients. South Texans for Reproductive Justice quickly organized a rally in solidarity with the clinic to show the anti choice marchers, Texas, and the World what community solidarity looks like. Shot and cut by me.
