Gary Swenson talks with with Barbara Leoff Burge, a WSW co-founder and one of Women's Studio Workshop's 2013 Gala honorees. A former stenographer herself, Barbara draws upon personal experiences personal experiences to create works in shorthand, leaving us with visuals that are both elegant and mysterious. Barbara herself is creative and lively, full of vibrancy, with an unsuspecting exterior. Her spark is something that has played an important role in both the life of the workshop and her own work. From her thought provoking work to her lovely personality, this year we are honored to celebrate “Babs” at our 6th Annual Gala.

Each year the Women’s Studio Workshop invites the community to come in from the cold and warm up with our annual Chili Bowl Fiesta Fundraiser at the Rosendale Recreation Center, where friends can browse and buy from a vast selection of handmade bowls and enjoy a helping of hearty chili generously donated by Hudson Valley restaurants and chefs. The Chili Bowl Fiesta draws over 700 attendees annually and has become a staple of Rosendale’s public festival schedule. Each year WSW’s ceramics studio buzzes with activity as artists, for the event, building bowls by hand or throwing them on the potter’s wheel, and glazing and firing each unique creation. Over 800 handmade bowls, mugs, and tumblers created by WSW staff, interns, resident-artists, students, and volunteers will be available for purchase at the event

A big thank you to everyone who joined the chili bowl fiesta fun on Feb 25th, 2012! With the help of innumerable bowl makers, bowl buyers, volunteers, chili and cornbread donors, WSW raised nearly $18,000! Funds raised will also support arts programming throughout the year, like Art-in-Education. We currently have 5th grade students from Ernest C. Myer Elementary working with professional artists in our studios and their delightful reaction to discovering printmaking and papermaking processes tells us that we are doing something RIGHT! Thank you to everyone who helped us raise funds, and a special shout out to the dynamic chefs who donated nearly 70 gallons of delish chili and cornbread: 9 Flowers, Bacchus, Bistro Mountain Deli, Boitson's, Crossroads Deli, Emmanuel's Marketplace, Hannaford Supermarket, High Falls Cafe, High Falls Food Co-op, Jack & Luna's Cafe, Karma Road, Main Course, Main St. Bistro, Market Market, McGillicuddy's, Mexicali Blue, Mohonk Mountain House, Mother Earth's Storehouse, Mountain Brauhaus, Mudd Puddle, New World Home Cooking, P&Gs, Red Brick Tavern, Rosendale Cafe, Sweet Maresa's Upstate Cupcakes, The Alternative Baker, The Bakery, The Egg's Nest, and The Gilded Otter.

Flick Book Studio is my social practice project. It serves to create meaningful connections among artists, and between artists and the community. The studio is an open studio for stop-motion animation. It is a place for artists to interact and collaborate with each other. It is a databank of skill-sets. This movie was adapted, as a part of my application for NYFA's artists' fellowship, from a PowerPoint presentation I made as an open letter to artists. It is a documentation of the studio's development, a tool of communication and promotion, an experiment as a social practice, and a work of conceptual video art, all at the same time. I like making presentation files for several reasons. It is strongly associated with the corporate culture, yet is full of creative potentials. I like incorporating movies and sounds, using fonts as visual elements, using timing to set a pace, and arranging visual media with writing to strengthen the story. I like the slight tackiness it possesses. I like to incorporate my artist’s obsessiveness in a subtle way so that the presentation maintains the “infomercial” feel. My goal is to strike the in-between place, where it is neither completely a business presentation nor a video art in the purist’s interpretation, while keeping both of these identities and the message persuasive. The soundtrack is Waybackdown remix by Moon Car (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=65882)
