Deborah Jensen explains the weather in Oklahoma and the amphitheater at Oklahoma zoo Dr. Deborah Jensen has NEVER been to Oklahoma Zoo, yet she speaks with authority on the facility, including the weather. I did a little digging, so to speak, and looked at the facility within Google Earth. The 6000 seat amphitheater is just 600 feet away from the elephant enclosure, she said it was not close. There are 80 days of temperatures below freezing. Jensen states the elephants have a choice whether to stay in the barn or go outside, Does this mean the barn door is always open? What choice would there be otherwise?

The transport companies owner that took Chai and Bamboo on the failed journey to Oklahoma zoo, had previously been involved in transporting elephants, on one occasion he was responsible for the demise of an elephant that had died because of the severe cold, there was NO climate control in her container.

After 48 hours, the elephants ended up in San Diego zoo, nearly 800 miles off the route and with 1300 miles still to travel. Julie Woodyer of ZOOCHECK suggests the containers were not climate controlled and rumor had it that Bamboo was suffering with colic.
