Thirteen Cabrini College students went to the U.S. Capitol Friday, May 1, 2009, to lobby on behalf of the 1 billion people in the world who suffer from chronic hunger. The students lobbied in support of the Casey-Lugar bill, S. 384, the Global Food Security Bill, but also proposed a significant amendment to the bill to make it more effective. The students met with aides of Senator Arlen Specter, Senator Robert Casey, and Senator Robert Menendez. The students, all enrolled in a course called Working for Global Justice taught by Prof. Jerry Zurek, studied interrelated issues of development and food security. In preparation for lobbying, they spoke with experts on food security and international development from countries ranging from Afghanistan, Ecuador, Kenya, and elsewhere. The students participated in a two-week seminar on Food Security in which they learned about Food Security and had on-line discussions with hundreds of university students at Cabrini and at Villanova University, and Seattle University. The seminar was part of the Catholic Relief Services Global Solidarity Network. The students had attended an advocacy-training workshop conducted by Bread for the World. While supporting the bill, the students lobbied for the inclusion of an amendment that would allow private voluntary organizations like Catholic Relief Services to participate in the agricultural development, nutrition, and crisis response activities authorized by the bill. The students were Christopher Blake, Gillian Davis, Caitlin Friel, Shannon Keough, Morgan Miller, Nicholas Pitts, Kara Schneider, Meghan Smith, Andrew Stettler, Diana Trasatti, Jake Verterano, Jessica Wegelin, Jennifer Wozniak. As part of Cabrini's new core curriculum, Justice Matters, students are learning advocacy skills. This was the first time each of these students had lobbied in Congress.
