Glenn Despain was working as a shoe maker for the Unalaska Shoe and Findings Company when he enlisted in the Army in October 1943 at the age of 23. Despain had come to Alaska two years earlier to work as a general laborer for Sims, Drake Puget Sound Co., a cement mixing plant in Unalaska, during construction of the Dutch Harbor Naval Base and Fort Mears. “They had a draft board there,” said Despain, leaning back in a recliner as a blazing fire crackled in a giant stone fireplace at his home in west Fairbanks. “I voluntarily enlisted; I wasn’t drafted.”

This short tribute video shot on the D Day beaches of Normandy, is one of many we have produced for individual families who helped with special support of the Faith of Our Fathers: A Final Farewell Celebration. There is no way to express our sense of gratitude to you appropriately, but we want you to know that you are yoke-fellows in the work of the Lord and the tremendous outpouring of thanksgiving and blessing we have received for this project also belongs to you.

Sea of Mending is a short film by Amanda Gotera based on Ted Kooser's poem, "A Jar of Buttons." The quilt in the title sequence (and in the last shot) was sewn by my great-great-grandmother, Ella Yeakley. The wooden spools all strung together belonged to my great-grandmother, Hazel Stephen Yeakley. And the sewing basket full of notions belongs to my grandmother, Mary Louise Yeakley Blue. This film was made in her home. Ted Kooser's poem, "A Jar of Buttons," appeared in Delights & Shadows in 2004 (Copper Canyon Press). The music heard in the film comes from Andrew Bird's "Dark Matter" and "Supine." I don’t own the music or the poem, and I do not profit from their use.
