A detailed and thorough examination of one of London's most iconic landmarks: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-archaeology-of-st-pauls-cathedral Recent work has brought together what we know of the Anglo-Saxon and medieval cathedrals beneath and around Wren's St Paul's, the City of London's most important historic building and monument. Now the little-known medieval cathedral, destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666, can be revealed as of European importance. It dominated the City and should be compared with other cathedrals - Ely, Norwich and Winchester. Part of the Mondays at One Autumn Series. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College Website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-archaeology-of-st-pauls-cathedral Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. A veteran of the Dunkirk evacuation, this modest ex soldier was awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre avec Palm for his Bofors gun defense of Antwerp harbour. John's wife Margaret, who he wed during the war, served as a Wren on HMS Caroline in Belfast docks, where she carried out important naval administration. Their stories provide a powerful portrait of life in a country at war.
