As a part of re­se­arch, an event, “Dialogue between an Artist and a Scientist” took place from De­cem­ber, 2013 to Ja­nu­a­ry, 2014. It fea­tured three dia­lo­gues on the the­me of mea­su­re­ment with dif­fe­rent fo­cu­ses. In each dia­lo­gue, one ar­tist and one sci­en­tist were in­vi­ted to give a pre­sen­ta­ti­on about their work which will lead into a dis­cus­sion. The aim was to in­ter­sect two dif­fe­rent ap­proa­ches and ide­as (ar­tis­tic and sci­en­ti­fic) about (the am­bi­va­lence of) mea­su­re­ment and mea­sura­bi­li­ty. The first dia­lo­gue was on Politics on Measurement by Chihiro Minato (JP) and Sophie Houdart (FR) on Dec. 11, 2013. Mi­na­to is a pro­fes­sor at Tama Art Uni­ver­si­ty, To­kyo and a pho­to­gra­pher with in-depth know­ledge on an­thro­po­lo­gy. So­phie Hou­dart is a so­cio­lo­gist at the La­bo­ra­to­ry of Eth­no­lo­gy and Com­pa­ra­ti­ve So­cio­lo­gy, Cen­ter for Sci­en­ti­fic Re­se­arch, Pa­ris. She is cur­rent­ly con­duc­ting re­se­arch on mea­su­ring dan­ger. They pre­sented their re­se­arch and dis­cussed the mea­su­re­ment hype, par­ti­cu­lar­ly in a re­la­ti­on to the Fu­kus­hi­ma ca­ta­stro­phe. Ti­mo­fee­va is a se­ni­or re­se­arch fel­low at the In­sti­tu­te of Phi­lo­so­phy of Rus­si­an Aca­de­my of Sci­ence and cur­rent­ly a Hum­bold­ti­an fel­low at Hum­boldt Uni­ver­si­ty in Ber­lin. She is con­side­red as one of the pionee­ring phi­lo­so­phers on Af­fect Theo­ry. Matt Mul­li­can is an ar­tist and a pro­fes­sor of Vi­su­al Art, Art Aca­de­my Ham­burg (HFBK). He deals with ques­ti­ons of per­cep­ti­on of rea­li­ty, fic­tion and the ima­gi­na­ry and the pos­si­bi­li­ties of its re­pre­sen­ta­ti­on.
