Canisius College Composer in Residence, Persis Vehar, introduces the "First Annual Persis Vehar Competition for Excellence in Composition" and welcomes the composers to the concert. The audience heard original works by: 1. Jason Zhou, piano - Sonatina in G (2010) 2. Leonard Ranallo, french horn - Jason and the Argonauts for Horn Quartet (Nicolas Sciandra, Cory Morrow, Leonard Ranallo and Amy Grogan) 3. Collin Kemeny - Azure Op. 15 for Orchestra 4. Aaron Robertson - Space Euphoria: An Adventure in Bliss (Ryann Aery, violin 1; Teagan Faran, violin 2; Dan Cho, cello; Jenny Gan, violo) 5. Brad Whitney, clarinet - Arundo Americana (2011) The winning composition, "Arundo Americana," is scored for two clarinets, string orchestra and percussion. Since it was not feasible to pull and orchestra together for this student workshop, Brad presented the piece using Sibelius composition software for video and audio playback. Also appearing are Michael Colquhoun, flutist, composer and Canisius College Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts/Music (and co-Adjudicator); and Jane Cary, Canisius College Music Department Director. The concert was staged at the Montante Cultural Center at Canisius College on March 29, 2011.

Mohammed Fairouz retains an optimistic outlook as he aspires to create music that carries a larger social meaning. And the 26-year-old composer has managed to garner an extraordinary array of performances for his deeply charged music all over the country—from over 100 art songs to a nearly 80-minute symphony for orchestra, soloists, and a nearly 100-voice chorus. The urgent message that comes across in Fairouz’s music is one of inclusivity and a broadening of cultural horizons. An important source for his music has been his own Arab heritage—he grew up hearing legendary singers Umm Kulthum and Fairuz (no relation) alongside Mozart and Beethoven. In a conversation with Frank J. Oteri for NewMusicBox, Fairouz even describes Schubert—with whom he deeply identifies—as an “Arabic composer” because of Schubert’s devotion to the primacy of the melodic line, also a hallmark of Middle Eastern music. But the American-born Fairouz would contend that his aesthetics are more symptomatic of the multicultural society we now live in.
