The £5 million David and Claudia Harding Mathematics Gallery will become a permanent addition to the Science Museum, as part of its planned £60 million redevelopment. These are troubled times for higher education. In recent years the idea of pursuing knowledge for its own sake has found little support. Instead of creating an atmosphere supportive of open enquiry and free thinking, universities have succumbed to a narrower, more pragmatic view of education focused on churning out employable graduates and offering ‘value for money’. This is one of the debates in mantownhuman's Critical Subjects Summer School which was a week-long opportunity for some of the keenest young design students - from UK and across the world - to engage in a series of intellectual, architectural and urban design challenges facilitated by leading names in the field. This debate sponsored and held in the offices of Zaha Hadid Architects in London. Originated by Future Cities Project and filmed by FCP Ltd and Oktoberworks mantownhuman.org

Does the call for us to respect the environment, to use ‘benign processes’ and 'natural materials' restrict our ambitions... or liberate us? After all, are we part of nature, or are we separate from it? Steve Parnell writing in the Architects' Journal complains that Schumacher doesn't 'define' parametricism. Meanshile, in Building Design Hanif Kara is reported to have polemicised against the 'faux-science of “parametricism” and the evils of techno-jargon'. Peter Buchanan, interviewed in the AJ, calls parametricism 'mere "exaggeration" with "nothing to do with the future" and suggests that the way forward is sustainable "Transmodern architecture" while US architect, Bill Caplan suggests that "parametricism is gratuitous form usually faking function".So, is Parametricism simply a software package masquerading as a philosophy, or a non-ideological reflection of our times? Is it shape-making or ground-breaking?
