Only the luckiest adults receive kites for Christmas and here is the maiden flight of mine, a brilliant spot in this khaki season. Up she went to 400 feet, carrying the GoPro camera on a tiny trapeze. Does the music remind you of a melancholy circus? Here's a lovely short verse by Oliver Herford. It's a favorite of ours and noticeably more hopeful than much of his work. Mr. Herford owned a sizzling wit ("Only the young die good"), was the author of "The Complete Cynic" and for all I know might've raised a brow at being evoked in the name of Christmas. He's not here, though. Merry Christmas all! Music by the Cheiftans. - you will notice I've dated the Herford verse to 1955. That's actually when it was published in America, by The Viking Press, in a collection called "Welcome Christmas! A Garland of Poems." Mr. Herford died in 1935.

Still on the Knoydart Peninsular. I get to learn a little about the pub (The Old Forge) and it's customers. I also sample a little local hospitality. The SS Badger is the last of its kind, the only coal-fired ship still carrying passengers and freight on the Great Lakes. Launched in 1953 -- the year Stalin died, the year Edmund Hillary climbed Everest and the first Corvette came off the line -- the Badger runs daily spring-to-fall across the heart of Lake Michigan. She's 400 feet long and able to carry 620 passengers and 180 cars. Her sister ship, the SS Spartan, seen in the opening shot, still lies dockside in Ludington, Michigan, but is retired from service.
