Laraaji is a musician, mystic and laughter meditation practitioner based in New York City. He began playing music on the streets in the 1970s, improvising trance-inducing jams on a modified autoharp processed through various electronic effects. Brian Eno saw him playing one night in Washington Square Park and invited him to record an album for his seminal Ambient series (Ambient 3: Day Of Radiance, released 1980). Laraaji has gone on to release a prolific series of album for a wide variety of labels, many of which he recorded himself at home and sold as cassettes during his street performances. In recent years he has been collaborating with a new generation of underground musicians, most notably on the album he recorded for the acclaimed FRKWYS series with Blues Control. This short documentary has been made to coincide with a series of reissues being released on the All Saints label. Produced by Chris Hall for Start Productions.

There must be something in the wind that really inspires me. Few days ago, I opened the window of my bedroom and I had the impression of being listening to the sound of sea waves. I felt so inspired that I went outside to record an abstract piece, I grabbed few instruments I had laying around and some pieces of wood I found at the beach few weeks ago. If I closed my eyes I could imagine my garden being the sea, my instruments being a little sailing ship and the trees the destination where I was going to. I hope you'll like it.

                • What's a Guzheng? Musician Bei Bei Shows You

                  from Voice Media Group Added

Before Bei Bei He plays her guzheng, she puts on her picks. The 32-year-old Southern Californian attaches all eight of them to her fingertips using cloth medical tape. Each pick is tortoiseshell and expensive. The guzheng is a type of zither, a stringed instrument with a movable bridge that allows the player to pluck out notes with one hand and bend the strings with the other, creating many effects. It's widely used in traditional and classical Chinese music but rarely in Western music. Bei Bei — professionally she goes by her first name — hopes to change that.

from Arne van den Berg Added 665 2 1

The idea is to make Computer-music with an analogue output and a live, visual performance. In history we have seen mechanical instruments like the pianola or the barrel organ and composers (Xenakis) who generate their scores with the use of the computer, which were studied and played by musicians. This piece is a reaction on these phenomena's. In mordern times of technology is it possible and challenging to replace the musician for a computer. And so, the zither is being played by electromotor which are switched and programmed with the use of arduino (software). In order to make the piece not as dead as the computer itself is, I developed some change factors in it, by using elastic wires between the balls and the motors. It's generating chaotic behaviour, and as a result, the piece never sounds the same when being played.
