Ten One Minutes on enlightenment

Thập mục ngưu đồ, or ten pictures of buffalo herding, is a series of short poems and accompanying drawings used in the Zen tradition to describe the stages of a practitioner's progress toward enlightenment, and their return to society to enact wisdom and compassion. Nhà Sàn Collective, based in Hanoi (Vietnam), invited artists and filmmakers from around the world to submit one-minute films responding to one of the ten stages.

Nhà Sàn’s curated selection ‘Ten Buffalos’ features ten One Minutes submitted from artists in diverse locations including Belgium, Iceland, Laos, Netherlands and Vietnam. A collection of videos that has deviated from the original formula, such as lectures or the teachings of self-enlightenment and Buddhism, bringing about a sense of strangeness.

‘Ten Buffalos’ will premiere on 13 January 2024 at Á Space in Hanoi, Vietnam before touring the world. For those unable to attend in person, online participation is available.

Nhà Sàn Collective: »Remember just a few months ago we issued an open call for a series of 10 videos:

“Out of ten pictures, choose one that inspires you the most as an approach for your video making. Your video is not necessarily an illustration for the picture, not necessarily a story based on the picture. Everything can be very indirect and distant or like an abstract concept… just believe that you are working on it.”

Looking back, everything seems like an occasion that leads to the image-making series. In search of feelings in images. There are a bunch of existing stories just waiting for us to get involved or not. We would like to reintroduce the official drawing series ‘Thập Mục Ngưu Đồ’ used in this project by Vietnamese artist Nguyễn Mỹ Anh as a starting point of inspiration. Currently we have ten videos in hand. A gathering of videos that bring about strangeness. Can we say that this series of ten videos has broken away from the original formula such as lectures or the teachings of self-enlightenment and Buddhism? It's good, but the description of the path of self-cultivation and attainment of enlightenment becomes a landscape that gradually fades away from the focus. One adjective we want to talk about again for this 10-video series is exactly that: strangeness.«

You might have seen their Vietnamese Immigration Garden at Documenta fifteen. Nhà Sàn Collective (NSC) began operating as an independent artist collective in Hanoi in 2013, when a group of friends set up a publicly accessible space. NSC has worked with fellow companions and collaborators to organize exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, talks, and other activities as a support platform for artists in the community. The initiative wants to encourage exchange, expansion, and connection and is open toward works in progress and the unexpected; a just-do-it attitude that does not always yield answers. The name Nhà Sàn signifies the collective’s foundation which is rooted in the spirit of Nhà Sàn Studio, an artist-run space founded in 1998 in Hanoi. The original Nhà Sàn, a house on stilts, was taken apart in 2020. In the Ngọc Thụy area by the bank of the Red River, the artists imagine this house to become the new Nhà Sàn Collective space, rebuilt, and transformed.

Mười phút về sự giác ngộ

Thập mục ngưu đồ, hay mười bức tranh về chăn trâu, là một chuỗi gồm 10 bức tranh được sử dụng trong Thiền tông để mô tả quá trình qua các giai đoạn của một hành giả đối với sự giác ngộ, và hành trình trở lại cuộc đời của họ để thực hành sự thông tuệ và lòng nhân ái. Nhà Sàn Collective từ Hà Nội (Việt Nam) đã mời các nghệ sĩ và nhà làm phim từ khắp nơi trên thế giới làm việc với chủ đề này theo thể thức video một phút.

Tuyển lựa ‘Thập mục ngưu đồ’ của Nhà Sàn Collective bao gồm mười video với được gửi từ các nghệ sĩ ở nhiều địa điểm khác nhau, bao gồm Bỉ, Iceland, Lào, Hà Lan và Việt Nam. Một tập hợp video này dường như đã bứt phá khỏi thể thức ban đầu. Một tổng thể mang lại một cảm giác lạ lẫm.
