Brandon Scott Rumsey (b. 1987, Las Vegas, NV) is an award-winning composer, multi-instrumentalist, educator, and interdisciplinary collaborator whose works for orchestra, wind ensemble, voice, chamber ensembles, solo instruments, and dramatic theatre have been featured at venues across the nation. Brandon is currently a Kent Kennan Endowed Graduate Fellow at The University of Texas at Austin Butler School of Music where he is pursuing a graduate degree in composition. Brandon holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Oregon where he studied with Robert Kyr and David Crumb. At Brevard Music Center and Bowdoin International Music Festival, Brandon studied with Robert Aldridge, David Dzubay, Robert Beaser, and Derek Bermel. This summer, he will be in residence at New Music on the Point Contemporary Chamber Music Program and will serve as the ITCH Ensemble Teaching Assistant at Brevard.
Brandon’s work for large chamber ensemble, SPELLBOUND, was recently selected by composer Dan Welcher for performance during The University of Texas New Music Ensemble’s 2012-2013 season, and his work for soprano saxophone and piano, NIGHTLIFE, was awarded the 2012 National Federation of Music Clubs Young Composer Award. As the 2011 assistant director of the Eugene Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, Brandon conducted his work for chamber orchestra, TIDES INSIDE on a fall concert of works by Oregon composers. Brandon’s music has been performed previously at Brevard Music Center by the ITCH Ensemble, Bowdoin International Music Festival’s Artists of Tomorrow series, the Oregon Bach Festival Composer’s Symposium by Fireworks Ensemble, Oregon Music Today Festival’s Sounding Images concert, and four North American Saxophone Alliance conferences.
Active as a bassoonist and saxophonist, Brandon is committed to the performance of new music. He has premiered over forty works with ensembles such as ECCE, University of Oregon’s premier new music ensemble; Loaded Dice Ensemble, specializing in improvised, aleatoric and indeterminate music; and the UT New Music Ensemble, renowned for featuring works of world-class guest composers every year. He has also performed with the Newport Symphony Orchestra, the University of Oregon Symphony Orchestra, and the UT Wind Ensemble.
Brandon actively collaborates with creators from various artistic disciplines. As a composer, conductor, and musical director he has worked on eighteen productions including musicals, contemporary plays, and intermedia performance in unique spaces.
Brandon is affiliated with ASCAP, SCI, American Composers Forum, International Double Reed Society, North American Saxophone Alliance, is the PR Coordinator for CLUTCH New Music in Austin, Texas, and serves as Composition Co-chair for The Graduate Association of Music & Musicians at UT (GAMMA-UT).
