The artist as protagonist is the focus of Jonny Reding's performance, video and photographic work. He often chooses moments from his life where he or others have responded to an everyday experience in a way that appears bizarre, or irrational in retrospect, unearthing in the everyday a resistance to rationality. His work ranges from a performance dressed as a white swan on a South African beach to attempting to translate the Chatham Historic Dockyard architecture into musical tones.
The work is inspired by Dadaism and in particular, German artists Anna and Bernhard Blume’s photographic work. Reding stays faithful to the Blumes’ “aim at creating an ironic activism critical of fear”.
