Director Kirk R. Thatcher
Kirk Thatcher is an Emmy award winning writer/producer, a four time
Webby award winning director, and a production designer with a
penchant for special effects, strange creatures, and comedic characters
with irreverent personalities. Kirk began his career at 19 years old,
working at George Lucas’s special effects facility, Industrial Light and
Magic, creating and puppeteering creatures for films like Return of the
Jedi, Star Trek II, Star Trek III, E.T., Poltergeist, and Gremlins. He also
was an associate producer on Star Trek IV, in which he had a memorable
cameo as the Punk on the Bus rocking out to the Punk anthem, “I Hate
You!” which he also wrote and sang.
Kirk just finished directing a Television movie, called, Turkey Hollow, for the Lifetime Network, starring Mary Steenburgen, Jay Harrington and four new creatures from Jim Henson's Creature Shop. In the last two years he has directed numerous Web Videos and Commercials for the Muppets, including spots for Audi, Warburtons, Miss Piggy’s new brand on QVC, called, Moi; Two Subway commercials and three “hidden camera” web videos with Toyota’s new Highlander. In the last two years, Kirk has also directed a Muppet music video with the musical group, OK GO, and a theatrical PSA/Commercial for the European telecommunications company, Orange. He also directed an animated theatrical film in 3D for the Sid the Science Kid series using both motion capture and animation for the Jim Henson Company.
Kirk’s first directorial effort was in 2003, on It’s A Very Merry Muppet
Christmas Movie for NBC, which drew more than 11 million viewers. He
has co-written several Muppet films including Muppet Treasure Island,
and directed television features, including The Muppets Wizard of Oz
which premiered at Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Film Festival. He was
Supervising Producer on the Emmy Award winning ABC series, Muppets
Tonight, and co-producer on the ABC series Dinosaurs, on which he
designed most of the characters, working closely with one of his mentors,
the Muppet’s creator Jim Henson.
Kirk also directed ten Muppet viral videos for You-Tube, including the
Muppets “Bohemian Rhapsody” which received two Webby awards and
over 25 million hits worldwide. He has also directed an award winning
commercial campaign for the Disney theme parks featuring the Muppets
in and around Disneyland promoting the “Give A Day – Get a Day”
volunteer program. Two years earlier he co-wrote and directed two
Disney Channel specials featuring the Muppets with teen stars the Jonas
Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Dylan and Cole Sprouse from The Suite Life of Zach and Cody, and Ashley Tisdale from High School Musical. He also directed NBC’s Muppet Christmas special, Muppets Letters to Santa featuring Nathan Lane, Uma Thurman and Jane Krakowski. Kirk has also written episodes for the Cartoon Network series Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends and directed episodes of Nickelodeon’s series Lazy Town, PBS’ Sid the Science Kid and Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers.
