Born in Hsinchu, Taiwan, Chun-Ming Chen (Jimmy) is the music director of Coe College Symphony Orchestra and also the founder of the Artists Chamber Orchestra in Taiwan. Mr. Chen is currently a Doctoral Candidate in orchestral conducting at University of Iowa under the direction of Dr. William LaRue Jones. Chun-Ming Chen serves as the Orchestra Manager of UI Orchestras where he also conducts University of Iowa Chamber Orchestra and All-University String Orchestra. Mr. Chen received his Master's degrees from Ithaca College and Boston Conservatory in 2011 and 2008. While in Ithaca, he studied with Dr. Jeffery Meyer and conducted the Ithaca College Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, Cornell Symphony Orchestra, and was the co-director of the Ithaca College Sinfonietta. While in Boston he served as assistant to Bruce Hangen. From 2007 to 2009, he was the Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Chinese Choral Society. Mr. Chen now lives in Iowa City where he also directs the choir at First Baptist Church in downtown Iowa City.
Chun-Ming Chen started to study music since 1995 as a percussionist in school marching band. Two years after, he studied Saxophone with Jung-Chang Ho and Cheng- Hsiu Li. Chun-Ming Chen started his career since his study in Tunghai University. During 1999 to 2004, he gave five recitals in Tunghai University and also performed in many well know concert hall in Taiwan. Chun-Ming Chen won the concerto competition in Tunghai University which led to performing Jacques Ibert: Concertino da Camera for Alto Saxophone at the Shin Min High School.
In Chun-Ming Chen’s college years, he studied saxophone with Hsien Li and Ching-Hsien Yen. In the same time, he studied conducting with Dr. Annie Chung. In 2004 to 2006, Chun-Ming Chen was invited to conduct various concerts by the Central Region Five-School String Orchestra, Classic Orchestra in Taichung, Wufeng Junior High School String Orchestra and the Bei-An Symphony Orchestra in Taipei. In 2006, he was invited by Tunghai University Opera Studio to conduct Giovanni Battista Pergolesi: La Serva Padrona in Ming-Shan Hall, Tunghai University and National Ta-Chia Senior Industrial Vocational School.
In 2006-2008, Chun-Ming Chen received scholarship from Boston Conservatory and studied with Bruce Hangen. Chun-Ming Chen served as assistant to Bruce Hangen in Boston Conservatory in 2007-2008 and was appointed in September 2007 as Director of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Chinese Choral Society. Chun-Ming Chen received his Master of Music degree from Boston Conservatory in 2008. Chun-Ming Chen received a full scholarship from Ithaca College to study under Dr. Jeffery Meyer in 2009. Chun-Ming Chen serves as assistant to Dr. Jeffery Meyer in Ithaca College from 2009- 2011 and conductor of Ithaca College Sinfonietta. From August 2011, Chun-Ming Chen served as Teaching Assistant in Orchestral conducting in University of Iowa under Dr. William LaRue Jones's direction.
