Valencia James was born in Barbados, where she first started dancing. She has trained in Cuba, the U.K. and obtained her BA in Modern Dance in 2010 from the Hungarian Dance Academy in Budapest. Valencia has participated in numerous workshops and festivals such as O Vertigo dance company, Ultima Vez dance company, American Dance Festival 2010, and Deltebre Dansa 2012. She presented her own choreography on several international stages including the 13th International Solo Dance Theatre Festival in Stuttgart. Valencia has worked with choreographers including Antonio Gomes, Ian Douglas, Rita Gobi, Kata Juhász and Wim Vandekeybus. She has worked as a soloist with the Yvette Bozsik Company since September 2010.
As a freelance performer and teacher based in Budapest, Hungary, Valencia has recently premiered the project, Commonplace with The Symptoms Company and teaches a weekly Afro-Caribbean class. In March 2013, Valencia won the Research into the Unknown residency from Workshop Foundation Hungary. She has since been researching how the exponential development of artificial intelligence will affect the performing arts and the performer.
