Weekend Challenge: Extreme Shots

Hey there, my dearest devisers,

Weekend Challenges are the best; that doubles as a fact and my opinion. There are over 14,000 folks in the Weekend Challenge group, and this will be the 25th Challenge since we started posting them weekly! I hope you all enjoy creating videos as much as I like watching them, and I'm so happy to see the regular participants learning and growing.

We thought it would be nice to put our stamp of approval on the winners of each Challenge, so it's my pleasure to announce the Challenge Winner Badge:

This badge will show up in the top-left corner of your video so the rest of the Vimeo Community can see (and so you can brag about) what you've accomplished!

For this Challenge, let's take a look at the ends of the shot spectrum: Extreme Wide Shots (EWS) and Extreme Close Ups (ECU). As we've mentioned before, shot variety makes for a more interesting story. In most cases, if your entire video consists of one single shot, your audience won't stay engaged.

The inspiration for this Challenge comes from Weekend Challenge participant Pat Boberg, and this video by directors Glen Milner and Ben Hilton:

Notice how often they move from an EWS to an ECU or an interesting POV shot (how's that for an acronym filled sentence — omg lol ikr?). EWSs are typically interested in the relationship between a subject and the surroundings, whereas ECUs are best for capturing detail.

This weekend, tell a narrative story using only Extreme Wide Shots and Extreme Close Ups! If you feel like it's necessary to use other shots, go ahead, but try to keep the meat of your project in those extreme zones.

+ Film a narrative using only (or mostly) EWSs and ECUs.
+ Keep your film under 3 minutes.
+ Add this at the end of your video's description: "Created for the Weekend Challenge: vimeo.com/groups/weekendchallenge"
+ Upload and post your video to the Weekend Challenge Group by ***Tuesday, February 18th, 2014*** at 11:59 PM (EST).

Only videos made specifically for this Challenge will be considered.

+ The winner will receive a Challenge Winner badge, and a free Vimeo Plus account for one year! If you're already a Plus member, you'll get another year!
+ The runner-up will receive an extra 3GB of upload space.

All videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don't worry if your video doesn't show up at first; we'll get to it!

Don't want to sound like a cry baby. But sadly, my 5x5 simplicity video was never up on the weekend challenge group, even though I posted it way before the deadline.

Arvind, I'm adding it now, but I went through every submission and didn't see yours — are you sure you checked the Challenge box in the "Add To" menu beneath your video?

Yup, I did. Also made sure that I tagged it 5x5 and had the "made for the weekend challenge in the description."

My favorite video entirely made of ECU shots is by Gustav Johannson:

I definitely could imagine him winning the challenge this time :3 :P

Is it okay to only use ECU, whit no use of the EWS?

Challenge yourself to find a way to use both -- how can an EWS emphasize the beauty in the details of your ECU?

I'm uploading as we all sit here and watch beautiful videos! I'm a first timer to Vimeo and really excited to be a part of this community. Would love any comments or feedback on my video, whenever it gets posted.... =)

Oh and I hope that "narrative" is loosely defined. Because my video doesn't have words, and yet definitely speaks a story anyone who has visited Minneapolis in February can recognize.
